Sir Donald Trescowthick AC KBE - businessman, philanthropist and advocate for Australian sport - lived a life that connected enterprise with generosity and leadership with compassion. Passing away on 13 August 2024 at the age of 93, he leaves behind an enduring legacy that spans business, sport, and community service.

Early Years and Entrepreneurial Spirit

Born on 4 December 1930, Sir Donald began his professional journey with a £10,000 loan from his father at just 21. He used it wisely to launch his first ventures - the foundation for a career marked by innovation and integrity.

He co-founded Swann Insurance, which grew into one of Australia's largest privately owned insurers before its sale to CGU. Later, he took control of Charles Davis Limited, transforming it into the retail giant Harris Scarfe Holdings Limited. His vision also spawned the hardware chain Harry's Hardware and several state-based acquisitions that reshaped Australian retailing.

Champion of the Olympic Movement

Sir Donald's name became synonymous with Australia's Olympic success. He founded the Prime Minister's Olympic Dinner in 1983 after meeting Prime Minister Bob Hawke at Flemington Racecourse - a moment that sparked one of Australia's most successful fundraising traditions. The dinner has since raised over $20 million for Olympians and Paralympians.

He served as Deputy Chairman of the National Olympic Fundraising Committee, Chairman of the Citizens Committee, and led the AOC Investment and Audit Committees between 1986 and 1994. From 1992 to 2000, he was the Australian Patron of the Special Olympics, advocating for inclusive sport at every level.

AOC President Ian Chesterman paid tribute: "Sir Donald had a profound impact on the Olympic movement. He was passionate about what our athletes do for the country and provided wise counsel and unwavering support."

Sir Donald often remarked that the Olympics were more than competition - they were a platform for peace. "As long as you're talking to people, you're less likely to be fighting them," he believed.

Leadership, Community and Sport

Sir Donald's love of sport and culture extended far beyond the Olympic stage. A devoted supporter of the Geelong Football Club, he served as its Number One Ticketholder for 23 years, guiding the club through some of its most pivotal moments.

He was also a lifelong racing enthusiast and shared a close friendship with legendary trainer Bart Cummings, celebrated for their shared love of the track.

His influence extended to the arts and charity. He supported the Australian Ballet, the DOXA Youth Foundation, and the Little Sisters of the Poor, and chaired fundraising committees for the Peter MacCallum Cancer Centre and the Victoria Minus Children's Appeal.

Behind his achievements stood his childhood sweetheart and partner of 72 years, Lady Norma Trescowthick. They met as teenagers in Ballarat and shared a lifelong love built on mutual respect and kindness.

"She worked beside me on every charity project," he once said. "She never wanted credit - she just wanted to help."

Together they established the Sir Donald and Lady Trescowthick Centre in Prahran, a place of care and compassion for the elderly. Lady Norma passed away in March 2024, leaving Sir Donald heartbroken but grateful for a life shared in purpose and love.

A Father and Mentor

Sir Donald was deeply proud of his children - Mark, Susanmary, Adam and Caroline - and often spoke of how family was his true measure of success. He is also remembered by his grandchildren Nicholas, Dominie, Alice, Oliver, Fletcher, Hennie and Mac, and great-grandchildren Reece and Rylee.
