Soon, Seymour residents will have access to a different kind of library — one filled with toys.
Families and children will be able to become members of the new Seymour Toy Library and borrow from a wide range of toys, thanks to a community-led initiative.
Seymour Toy Library team leader Michael Easton said the project came about after a group of local residents partnered with Scripture Union Ministries Australia to bring the idea to town.
“We saw funding available for a toy library through the Victorian Government, and we put an application in,” he said.
“We received $40,000, which has helped us to purchase shelving, toys, a computer, other equipment and signage.”
Mr Easton said the toy library was about much more than providing toys.
“Our overall dream is creating places that people can belong and grow physically, socially and spiritually,” he said.
“We thought a toy library is a great opportunity for that to happen for young ones, their families and carers to get together and have a space where they can belong.
“Some of the research we’ve done has shown that people aren’t just looking for toys to borrow — they’re looking for community.”
The library will feature an online catalogue, allowing members to browse available toys before visiting.
Mr Easton said his involvement in the project was driven by a desire to give back to the community.
“The community doesn’t grow and prosper unless we get involved, so if we can be a part of that, all the better,” he said.
The Toy Library will officially open on Saturday, June 20, at Seymour Uniting Church on Crawford St from 10am to 1pm.
Visitors will have the opportunity to explore the range of toys available while enjoying a jumping castle, petting zoo and live music.
“The Seymour Lions Club will be doing a barbecue, and we’ll have a coffee van too,” Mr Easton said.
Following the grand opening, the library will operate every Wednesday from 10am to 2pm and on the second Saturday of each month at Seymour Uniting Church.
