Mount Pleasant bye
LBU and Colbinabbin met in a clash between two finals contenders at Lockington Recreation Reserve, the Cats coming off a bye and on a three-game winning streak, while Colbo was also in decent form having won two in a row.
The two sides could barely be split during the first quarter, as LBU kicked two straight and the Grasshoppers found one major, although they did create three more scoring shots.
Colbo’s chance creation paid dividends in the second term as it suddenly booted seven goals while holding the Cats to only one, the visitors putting themselves in a commanding position at half-time, leading 8.7 (55) to 3.2 (20).
The Hoppers avalanche continued after the main break, with LBU going goalless during the third quarter as Colbo added another six majors to its total, securing the four points ahead of the final term by holding a 73-point lead.
The Cats did marginally win the fourth quarter with three goals to two, but it was only consolation, Colbinabbin coming away from its trip with a comfortable 16.15 (111) to 6.7 (43) victory.
Alex Carr was in fine form for Colbo has he booted five majors, while a pair of goals each saw Brayden Hull and Bart Phillips lead LBU’s goal-kickers.
Bart Phillips (pictured) and Brayden Hull were LBU’s leading goal-kickers in the loss to Colbinabbin.
Hull was also named in the Cats’ best alongside Bowden Stone, Riley Carr, Patrick Keele, Charlie Hinks and Nick Smart, with Colbo naming Alex Carr, Aidan Basile, William Le Deux, Connor Aldous, Angus Martin and Jai Carn in its list.
LBU slipped to fifth on the ladder ahead of a trip to Elmore on Saturday, while Colbinabbin remains second despite making ground on Mount Pleasant, who had a bye, with Linton Jacobs’ side serving one of its own this weekend.
Huntly vs Elmore
Elmore continues to have just one win to its name this season after being thrashed by Huntly.
Elmore’s trip to Huntly saw two sides struggling at the bottom meet, both in desperate need of wins to keep their seemingly faint finals hopes alive.
The Hawks were winless heading into the clash and likely saw Elmore — with only one victory — as a side it could beat, and the hosts started well, kicking five goals to two in the opening quarter.
The Bloods continued to struggle to slow down Huntly’s attack in the second term, conceding another four majors while only adding two more to their total, and faced a sizeable half-time deficit, trailing 4.6 (30) to 9.6 (60).
Scoring slowed after the main break, each side kicking only one goal in the third quarter, which was of little help to an Elmore side attempting to make up a 36-point margin in the final term.
It would take a monumental comeback for the Bloods to win, and in the end the opposite occurred, Huntly putting its foot down during the fourth quarter by booting seven majors and keeping Elmore to two behinds, winning 17.16 (118) to 5.9 (39).
Ashton Sinn was responsible for two of the Bloods’ goals and was named in their best players with Rhys Holmberg, Hayden Trewick, Xavier Coghill, Charlie O’Toole and Kynan Sharpe.
Ashton Sinn had a solid day at the office for Elmore despite the defeat.
Such a heavy defeat to the only winless team in the competition would be particularly disappointing for Elmore, which replaced Huntly at the bottom of the ladder and needs a much better display to beat LBU this weekend.
Elsewhere, there were a couple of stunning results, firstly at Gunbower Recreation Reserve, where Leitchville-Gunbower edged past North Bendigo.
The Bulldogs led by four points entering the final quarter, but the Bombers stormed home, booting four goals to two in the fourth to win 11.9 (75) to 10.8 (68).
The result between Heathcote and White Hills was more stunning for the margin than the outcome, as the Saints totally dominated the Demons in a 79-point win at Barrack Reserve.
White Hills remained in the game until half-time, only trailing by 26 points, but the hosts were devastating after the main break, piling on 13 goals to four to run out 22.15 (147) to 9.14 (68) winners.
