Experience a taste of Italy in Shepparton at La Velluto

“Some of our friends live here,” Mr Toor said.

“They said, ‘Come here and have a look.’ We came here, stayed for two nights and we liked it. It's very quiet and peaceful.”

They both have years of experience in hospitality, with Mr Singh working at an Italian restaurant for over 15 years.

“Five or six years ago, we started thinking about having our own business,” he said.

For the new restaurant owners, their restaurant is more than a job.

“People have asked me ‘why you care so much about the food?’,” Mr Singh said.

“Some people are just doing a job, but I’m not... I just care.”

Now, they spend most of their time in La Velluto's kitchen, supported by two casual staff members, and their families.

Their focus is on traditional Italian flavours, with everything from gnocchi to pizza sauces made in-house.

“Our homemade gnocchi is one of our favourites,” Mr Singh said.

With an extensive menu, they cater for a range of dietary requirements, with vegetarian, vegan and gluten-free options available.

Key ingredients such as cheeses and pizza flour are imported from Italy, while fresh produce is sourced locally.

Mr Singh says he enjoys that, as owners, he can better manage ingredients to minimise food waste.

After just over a month in business, the pair said customer numbers had steadily grown as more people discovered the restaurant.

“If you want to try good food, come along,“ Mr Toor said with a smile.
