When coach Danny O’Bree decided it was time to move captain Tara Slender out of defence, the side appeared to be left with a massive gap.
But O’Bree’s decision to put Williams at centre half-back has worked wonders in the opening rounds of the NAB League girls’ season.
Against the Geelong Falcons on February 20, the teenager played a strong role in limiting the influence of the visitors’ most dangerous forwards.
Her performance earned her a place in the NAB League team of the week.
And O’Bree said he was looking forward to seeing what she could produce for the rest of the season.
“I really enjoyed watching Tegan throughout the pre-season and how hard she has worked on her game,” he said.
“Before our first game, we sat down as a coaching group and tried to work out our options for one of the most important positions on the ground and we settled on Tegan.
“She has really taken the challenge in her stride and is starting to make the position her own which is really exciting.
“Her kicking and marking ability are fantastic and give us some really good drive out of the back half of the ground.
“I’m hopeful she keeps up her strong form in the coming weeks.”
