Lockington Bowls Club
Another week of enjoyable bowling with great numbers on both scrounge days.
On Wednesday, the bowls attracted three rinks, resulting in some dynamic bowling from all players.
Rink one provided plenty of tension and tight heads, with Ray Hanson showing the way in a very enlightening contest, scoring 34 points to just shade Pos Andrea on 31 points.
Close by was Lorraine Appleby, 29, and Neil Haines, 23 points.
Next door there was another tight game with only three points covering the field.
Bruce Haines (Echuca) won the game on a solid 48 points ahead of Owen "Smiley" McPhee, 47, and Peter Egan rounded off the encounter on 45 points.
On the final rink, John Andrea was in blistering form to amass a day high 61 points to defeat Lorraine Appleby on a consistent 54 points, with Frank Chugg managing 21 points.
Saturday brought in some slightly indifferent weather during the course of play. However, the bowlers took it in their stride.
What a difference a few days makes, where Frank Chugg rose to the occasion and displayed a high standard to tally a game-winning 58 points, shading John Andrea with a healthy 49 points, while Alan Sharpe managed 32 points.
On rink two there was a real battle as Rod Fiedler scored a winning 58 points, while Nat McLaughlin and Peter "Eggsy" Egan could not be separated on 40 points each. The bowling was a treat to watch.
The final rink resulted in Steve Peter winning the game on a total of 64 points, with Ashley Dobell not far away on 54 points, followed by Sharron Sharpe finishing with a total of 22 points.
The game of scrounge will continue on Wednesday and Saturday (weather permitting), while the greens are rolling a true and even pace.
Congratulations to all local district bowlers who performed at the recent Bowls Australia championship carnival.
Rochester Golf Club
Chris Trewin has been playing some of his best golf of late, scoring 24 Stableford points. Even missing out on the 13th, he easily won last Wednesday's 9-hole event.
Next best was Mike Austin on 21, from Steven Bubb and Des Hocking, both on 20 points.
Richard Feuk was nearest the pin on the short 12th.
Andrew Purdy's net 70 was just enough to hold off president Leigh Hicks on a countback at last Saturday's stroke and second round of the men's club championship.
Jake Wright continues to play good golf, his 72 for net 71 was the next best and leads A-grade by five shots from Hicks.
Other good net scores were recorded by Paul Evans (71), Trewin and Brendan McCarty (72), and Ap Kuiper, Neil Goghill, and Shane Bywaters (all on 73).
Bywaters was closest on the third, Hicks on five, and Zac McInness for his second shot to nine.
Trewin followed up with a nice birdie after hitting it close to the 16th hole, while Wright's big hitting helped him hit it close to the 18th.
Due to the inclement weather, the ladies postponed last Friday's event.
The Rochester Golf Club flew flags at half-mast after hearing the very sad news of the passing of Ian Clark after a car crash last Friday.
Ian was the men's president and chairman of the board for seven years, from 2015 to 2022.
Ian was dedicated, had a major impact on the club's governance and operations, and was generous in his commitment to the club in many ways.
Our thoughts are also with the family of Lindsay Nelson on his recent passing.
Essie and Lindsay were great supporters of our club, especially in the early formation after moving to the Black Culvert course.

Friday, June 19 — Stableford
Due to the inclement weather, the ladies played a quick nine-hole Stableford round.
Best on course was Jenny Holt with a very respectable 17 points, ahead of Pauline Humbert on 16. Great to see Angela Bacon out having a hit.
Saturday, June 20 — Stroke
The final round of the club championships saw Grant Humbert leave his best golf of the three weeks to the last round.
He returned an excellent one-under par round of 69, highlighted by five birdies (first, fifth, 12th, 13th, and 14th).
Grant’s scores of 79-74-69=222 comprehensively secured his 27th club champion title, with Jason Wakefield (245) the runner-up, ahead of Steve Holt and Kevin Humbert, tied for third on 253.
The A-grade nett title was close after two rounds, with seven players separated by only six shots.
It was Jason Wakefield’s overall consistency (72-73-70=215) that ultimately won him the title, ahead of Steve Holt (68-73-76=217) and the fast-finishing Ian Maddison (74-73-70=217).
After two rounds, Andrew Harris was four shots in front of Darren Carnie in the race for the B-grade title.
Darren struggled to make an impression, and a four-putt on his ninth hole left him five shots behind and appeared to have cruelled his chances.
A four-shot swing on the next hole, when Andrew found a lot of tree trouble, suddenly made it a one-shot match.
Andrew steadied again, gradually increasing his lead, and a solid par on the last sealed a gutsy four-shot win, with scores of 90-84-91=265, ahead of Darren (269), with Jeff Carnie (282) in third place.
Tony Brooke was a massive 13 shots in front in the race for the B-grade nett title after two rounds.
Despite losing three shots off his handicap last week, and his golf cart breaking down again—it was a flat tyre this time—his brilliant form continued, a nett 71 this week gave him a three-round total of 200 and a huge 15-shot winning margin over Darren Carnie, with Jeff Carnie (222) in third place.
Tony also won the veterans title with his rounds of 68-61-71=200 (best in the club over the three rounds), ahead of Darren Carnie (215), with Steve Holt and Ian Maddison tied for third on 217.
