The Magpies led by 10 points at half-time, but it was the Road that paved the way to victory in the second half, kicking six goals to three to win 9.13 (67) to 8.5 (53).
The four points are a big boost for Congupna in the race for finals football, while the loss means Moama’s chances of a top-two finish are looking slim.
Moama coach Sam Sheldon said Congupna was too good for his side on the day.
“They were just too strong in the air and ran over us, we had our work cut out for us,” Sheldon said.
“We played pretty well, we just couldn’t get the job done in the end.
“We nearly got back late, but we just couldn’t quite get over the line.”
The Magpies held the edge over the visiting Road after a tight first half, leading by 10 points at the main change.
But a strong third term saw the Road boot four goals to Moama’s one to hold a nine-point lead heading into the final quarter.
Congupna squandered multiple chances in front of goal early in the fourth that could have put the game out of reach, but its wayward goal kicking kept Moama in the game.
The Pies almost made the Road pay for their inaccuracy drawing within a kick midway through the last term, but two late Congupna goals put the result beyond doubt.
Sheldon said his side played well early, but would need to improve when the pressure was on.
“We started really well, we just need to keep improving. We had a fair few boys play pretty good games, we just got run over in the end,” he said.
“When the pressure is on in the game, it’s all about making those moments count and in a few of those big moments didn’t go our way.
“We missed a few opportunities ourselves, so that didn’t help either.”
Magpies skipper Jack Russell led the way for his side with three goals, with Fraser Buchanan and Mitchell Lake booting two apiece. Daniel Campbell kicked four majors for Congupna.
Sheldon said Russell, Mitch Lake and Jordan Ives were three of his side’s top performers.
“Mitch lake played a really good game at centre-half forward for us, I thought he really took it on,” he said.
Despite the loss, Moama is still in third spot on the ladder, but it missed a chance to move within a game of second-placed Mulwala.
Congupna meanwhile solidified its spot in the top six, two games ahead of Nathalia in seventh.
Somewhat worryingly for Moama, the Pies are yet to win a game against any of the sides currently in the top six. But Sheldon said he was not too perturbed
“It’s not overly concerning, we just have to keep improving,” he said.
“We need to start knocking a few of those sides off, obviously, but we will get a chance this weekend against Deni and hopefully we’ll get the job done.”
Moama (8-3) will face fifth-place Deniliquin Rams (8-3) this Saturday.
