Merkel's purse stolen during shopping

Police confirmed a theft reported by a 67-year-old woman in the Mitte district.

The stolen wallet contained an identity card, debit card, driving licence and cash.

The former chancellor's office refused to comment.

Merkel was accompanied in the supermarket by at least one bodyguard from the Federal Criminal Police Office (BKA).

Police are now investigating the theft.

Even while chancellor of Germany, Merkel went shopping herself and was often seen at a supermarket near the government district or in the grocery department of a French department stores' in Friedrichstraße, in downtown Berlin.

One of the most powerful leaders in Germany's post-war history and a major player on the European and global stage, Merkel left her role as chancellor last year after 16 years in power.
