The Department of Energy, Environment and Climate Action has made changes to Water (Recreational Area) Regulations 2023, which applies to 40 of Victoria’s water storages.
G-MW manages 23 water storages; 21 of which provide a range of on- and off-water activities such as boating, fishing, bushwalking, bird watching, camping and opportunities for gathering with friends and family.
G-MW worked in consultation with Traditional Owners, local government authorities, catchment management authorities, partnering stakeholders, special interest groups, local community members and recreational visitors to develop the first 10 of 18 Recreational Area Management Plans.
A number of key themes emerged from the community feedback.
Dogs and recreation were frequently mentioned.
The plans have been updated to allow dogs to go in the water within public recreation areas at G-MW-managed storages.
Pet owners are reminded to clean up after their dogs, be mindful of other recreational area users and ensure their dogs are under effective control at all times.
Stakeholders requested clarity on vehicle access below full supply levels.
The plans have been updated to provide greater clarity on vehicle access below full supply levels. Vehicles can access low-level boat ramps via existing formed tracks, with vehicle and trailer parking permitted around the boat ramp.
Any site-specific details can be found in each plan.
The final eight plans, for Cairn Curran Reservoir, Hepburns Lagoon, Lake Nillahcootie, Lake William Hovell, Mildura Weir, Newlyn Reservoir, Torrumbarry Weir and Tullaroop Reservoir, will be released for review and feedback in 2026.
