Lockington Bowls Club
A bit small in the way of news this week, as the forthcoming 2025-26 Pennant Season is knocking on the door.
There was no Scrounge on Wednesday, while the members had little to report from the Sixty and Over competition held at the Rochester Bowls Club on Wednesday.
Excellent hospitality and true running greens.
On Saturday, the crowd was only meagre as members were glued to the television sets watching the AFL grand final.
However, there was a real challenge match played, and the winning team absolutely trashed their opposition 17-5.
Congratulations to Pos Andrea, John Andrea and Cindy Felmingham (s) on a near flawless display.
The opposition, comprising Shane Felmingham, Lloyd Buchanan and John Fisher (s) may have a bit of work to do before they line up for Pennant.
Campaspe Area Weekend pennant begins this Saturday with Division Three .v. Rochester (away), Division Four .v. Rochester at home while Division Five takes on Rich River (away).
Midweek pennant begins on Tuesday, 7th October, with Division Three v. Rich River at home, together with Division Four.
Best of bowling to all clubs and bowlers, and trust that all have a successful season of Pennant.
The women are holding a 3-bowl triples tournament on Wednesday commencing at 10am.
Contact Kathi Maddison 0428 862 347 or Denise Gilmore 0422 819 027 for entries.
On Sunday, October 19 the club is holding the Annual Prestigious Waterwheel Classic Fours starting at 9.30am.
Contact Cindy Felmingham or Ray Hanson, the field is filling fast.
The Friday evening bowls practice and barbecue will commence this coming Friday.
Practice makes perfect.
60 and Over
The Campaspe and District 60 and over bowls group held their weekly bowls at Rochester on a mild and cloudy spring day.
There were 26 teams of four, that is 104 bowlers competing for a chook.
Some teams had players short and were filled in with Rochester Players.
There were three three-game winners.
Unfortunately, Bill Branders team from Mathoura only had two bowls near the Jack and missed out.
David Grant's team from Stanhope were second with three bowls near the jack.
The team consisted of David Grant lead, Barry Williams second, John Gibbs third and Geoff Crilly was their Skipper.
The winners, with five bowls near the jack, were Anton Gusak’s team from Rochester.
The team consisted of Ian Dennis lead, Alan Williams second, Graham third, and Anton Gusak as their Skipper.
Both teams’ players won a chook each.
Next Wednesday is at Mathoura starting at 11am.
The contacts for next week are Lindsay Vallance on 0408 361 271 or Bill Brander on 0421 257 593
Good bowling to all.
Rochester Golf Club
92 golfers played in our popular annual MND Charity 4-Person Ambrose format last Friday.
The course, being in excellent condition and strong westerly winds meant that all the long holes downwind had more potential for the big hitters in the groups to score eagles or birdies.
This was the case with David Gebbie's team of Shane Bywaters, Andy Purdey and Frank Severino, their 10 under-par (62) off the white markers easily won the best gross score.
Surprise winners in the handicap section were Grant Robinson, Tonny Griffiths, David Harris and James Anderson, net 55.5.
David Fuller, Chris Trewin, Peter Palmer and Les Hedington were next best (56.25), followed by the teams of Greg and Sam Watkins, Tanya Niven and Sanjay Ranchhod (57.25), president Leigh Hicks, Bruce Bryant, Corrie Windridge and Mike Austin (58.375), the Lockington team led by Darren Carnie (59.75), and Bamawm's Lee, Vicary, Laffy and Wincombe (60).
Other ball winners were the team led by Colin Harvey, Kevin Humbert and the Rochester team captained by Louise Williams.
Longest drives went to Karen Taylor and Michael Georgiani.
Straight drives on the 10th were won by Karen Ballantyne and young Josh Cleary.
Di Johnson (5th) and Karen Taylor (12th) were the ladies nearest-the-pin winners, while the men's were taken out by a happy Julian Lees (8th) and David Fuller (16th).
Young and upcoming golfer Zac McInness won a ball for his eagle 3 on the par-5 5th hole.
Captain Darren White thanked all those who assisted in preparing the course, working in the clubrooms, and, in particular, our major sponsors, Rochester Sports Power and Nutrien Ag Solutions, for the money raised, which will be split between MND and local charities.
Visitors were from the usual local golf clubs such as Elmore, Lockington, Bamawm, Rich River, and from Castlemaine, Port Arlington and Portland.
On Saturday, a small group played early, in ideal conditions.
Zac McInnes, once again broke his handicap, winning with 40 Stableford points from Shane Connelly (37) and Col Harvey on 36 points.
Shane Bywaters (3), Zac McInnes (5 and 9), Greg Watkins (16), and Troy McInnes were nearest for his second shot on the 18th hole.

With the early hit off, a number of golfers stayed to watch the AFL grand final, and enjoyed some delicious platters of food, generously provided by Cindy Portwine.
The event proved to be remarkably competitive, with six teams separated by only 1.17 of a shot.

Goulburn Valley Veteran Golfers
85 players participated in the first round of the GV Veteran Golfers championships at Hill Top Golf and Country Club on Monday, September 22.
The weather was okay, moving from 12 to 15°C throughout the day, but with a chilling SW wind blowing fairly steady between 20-30km/hr and a brief 0.2 mm shower.
We were pleased to introduce a new sponsor for today’s trophies; Jac Farrow of Pit Lane Golf Carts and Mobility.
The championship sponsor over the three events is our long-time supporter, Goulburn Murray Credit Union (GMCU).
Today’s results and the championship (best two results over three events) is decided on stroke scores.

These two also featured as winner and runner-up last year but in reverse order.

Two teams from Goulburn Valley Vets contested the Victorian Veteran Golfers annual teams challenge held at Portland Golf Club on Monday and Tuesday 15-16 September.
The event was staged in atrocious weather, with blustery winds on the Monday and more wind and rain on the Tuesday.
Team 1 of Bruce Brown (Merrigum), Bill Murphy (Mooroopna) and Greg Hall (Merrigum) achieved 18th place (40 teams contesting) but Team 2 did not finish.
Our next event, and the second round of the championship, is at Numurkah Golf Club on October 6.
Remember that the championship is decided on the aggregate of the best two rounds out of the three to be played – you can afford one bad round.
