A meeting was held on Wednesday, July 22, with all nine HDFNL clubs present to vote on Cohuna’s bid to transfer from Central Murray Football Netball League.
The Kangas were denied 6-3, falling short of the required number of votes in favour, which must be two thirds of the members present.
League general manager Laura Norton was unable to provide comment on the reasons why clubs were for and against Cohuna joining the competition.
The Kangas wished to move to aid player retention and recruitment.
They are facing challenges with senior players based in Bendigo and Melbourne indicating that they do not want to travel north of Cohuna any more for matches.
It is the third time the club has had a proposed move to the HDFNL rejected, having also been denied in 2023 and 2024.
Cohuna can continue to apply, as per the AFL Victoria club and team transfer regulations.
It is allowed one application each year, which needs to be lodged by June 30 at 5pm with the governing body and the CMFNL through an intention to transfer form.
Both of the club’s senior sides have been performing well in their respective competitions.
The Kangas’ senior footballers finished fourth, setting up a qualifying final against Nyah Nyah West United, while their A-grade netballers have an elimination final against Ultima after placing fifth.
