The WorkSafe Country Club Games initiative aims to champion regional communities and their volunteers, while serving as a platform for supporting football and netball clubs to promote the importance of workplace safety.
By taking part in the week, Elmore Football Netball Club also receives a financial contribution from WorkSafe, along with new footballs, netball and goal post padding.
The club was visited by 2016 Western Bulldogs premiership player Tom Boyd and former Australian Diamonds captain Sherelle McMahon at training on Thursday night, with Boyd returning with Melbourne Vixens premiership-winning player Caitlin Thwaites on Saturday.
Despite the celebrations, the Bloods weren’t able to get over the top of ladder-leader Mount Pleasant.
Elmore (2.2) fell behind early but remained in the hunt throughout the first quarter, with the mighty Mounts putting on 4.5 to take a 15-point lead at the first break.
Both teams almost doubled their scores in the second quarter, with the Bloods tallying 2.1 and Mount Pleasant adding 4.3 to hold a 27-point lead heading into half-time.
The Blues’ lack of goal-scoring (1.3) in the third term left the door ajar for the home side to put on a big comeback, but Elmore added just 1.2 to its tally.
With 28 the deficit, the Bloods had to put their best foot forward down the stretch to pull off an almighty upset over the flag favourites.
Unfortunately, it wasn’t to be.
Mount Pleasant (9.1) put in a dominant display in the fourth quarter to overpower Elmore (4.1).
The final score was Elmore 9.6 (60) to Mount Pleasant 18.12 (120).
The Bloods were able to give the substantial crowds something to cheer for through three quarters, but just couldn’t hold on against the might of the Mounts.
Nathan Kay (4) led the way in front of goal for Elmore, with Liam Bianco (2) and Luke Price (2) providing assistance.
Elmore Football Netball Club president Kane Cornell reflected on the day and was happy with how much support the club received.
“It was a great opportunity for our club and the community to showcase what we have to offer, so we were absolutely thrilled to host it,” he said.
“The crowd was incredible and we always get a sizeable amount against clubs like Mount Pleasant.
“The day was a complete success and highly recommend it for any other sporting club in the future.”
