Colbo conquers Hawks in the race for second place

Colbinabbin is in a fight with Mount Pleasant to lock up second place heading into the final round of the Heathcote District Football League after hopping past Huntly in round 17.

The Hawks, who are currently tied on record (7-7) with L-G, will play finals this year regardless of their finish.

Meanwhile, Colbinabbin looks like one of the teams to beat in the hunt for the flag, especially during round 17, where it had no troubles dealing with Huntly at Colbinabbin Recreation Reserve.

In a competitive first quarter, the Grasshoppers nailed five majors to open their account, but the Hawks weren’t rattled, replying with three of their own.

Huntly doubled up its first quarter score in the second, while Colbinabbin had a slight downturn in productivity, yet still finding space for a three-goal quarter to increase its lead to 16 by the major break.

The Grasshoppers turned up the heat once more in the third term, sending five more through the middle despite not being entirely accurate, with seven shots returning for minor scores.

The third stanza was the Hawks’ least effective quarter in front of goal, with the side settling for a tidy 2.2 while letting the deficit grow to 39.

While Huntly finished off strongly (3.1), Colbo’s consistent ability to kick goals saw it boot five in the final quarter and claim a 54-point scalp to give it a real shot of a top-two finish.

The Grasshoppers shared the load in front of goal in the 18.19 (127) to 11.7 (73) win with Alex Carr, Nick Knight and Sam Ryan all kicking four majors. Matthew Riordan was named best-on-ground.

Colbo’s destiny will be in its hands in round 18, with a winner-takes-all game lined up against Mount Pleasant at Toolleen Recreation Reserve, with the victor securing that coveted second-place finish heading into a wide-open finals.
