Blues lose touch in second half

Picola United had good periods against Tungamah, but the Bears overpowered the Blues in the second half.

It was anyone’s game at the main break, but Picola United wasn’t able to keep pace in the second half of its Picola District Football League clash at Tungamah.

The Bears had most of the running in the first quarter, kicking a confident 5.5 (35) to the Blues’ 3.1 (19) to open up a useful early lead.

Picola would fight back and nearly had parity restored by half-time, holding Tungamah to a behind in a low-scoring term, while kicking two majors of its own.

Down by four and with the momentum, Picola looked to push on after the break, but things swung back Tungamah’s way in the third.

The Blues continued their consistent progress, but the Bears exploded again for another five goals to get out by 25, and this time they didn’t let up in the following term, rolling to a 14.11 (95) to 9.4 (58) win.

Duana Haebich was key to the Bears’ offensive efforts, leading the game with six goals, while Picola looked to Jared Laffy for its best production with three.

After a string of losses, the Blues have looked better over the past fortnight, logging a draw the previous week and a competitive performance this time out.

United (4-1-6) will hope that uptick will lead to more wins when it battles Tocumwal on July 11, following the league general bye.
