Rochester Secondary College acting principal Chris Sanders was thrilled with the participation of the students.
“The Great Vic Bike Ride will be an opportunity for our students to get away and forget about the troubles at home, have some fun, and socialise with their peers in a new environment,” Mr Sanders said.
“It will be a challenge for them to get through the ride, and it will be character-building for them if they can push through and get to the end.”
The team will depart from Orbost on Saturday, November 25, and arrive at Sale on Wednesday, November 29, covering 300km over five days.
The 14 students from Years 10 and Year 11 will be joined by three staff members who will ensure the ride goes smoothly.
“All students have been doing some training rides but only minimal,” Mr Sanders said.
“We are trying to ramp it up at the moment, so it is not too much of a shock to ride the 84km on day two of riding.”
In late May, 30 bikes were stolen from the school, with 18 eventually being recovered.
Fortunately, the 18 returned bikes were in good condition.
While bad luck struck the school earlier this year, there has also been some good fortune for the tight-knit school community.
“Bicycle Network has given terrific support to get us on the Great Vic Bike Ride,” Mr Sanders said.
“They have been great at helping our students, and we would not be able to join in without their support and Variety.”
