St Mary’s College Year 11 student Isla Banks said she had long been drawn to art.
“It’s something that I’ve always been into,” she said.
Of the many mediums out there, it’s painting and sculpting that have captured Isla’s interest the most — particularly the latter of the two.
“I like oil painting and I really like sculptures, it’s probably one of my favourite things to do,” she said.
Isla’s favourite thing about sculpting is the process.
“It’s doing it, as it slowly comes together,” she said.
Lately, Isla has been inspired by owls, and a sculpture of such a bird led to her recent win at the Seymour Show, held at Kings Park on Friday, October 2 and Saturday, October 3.
Isla’s sculpture of an owl, made with paper and wood shavings from the college’s woodwork room, saw her take home the Seymour and District Art Society scholarship, as well as the Seymour Agricultural and Pastoral Society emerging artist sash.
Her name was also etched into a silver plate, which also displays the names of previous emerging artist award winners.
Isla said the win was a shock.
“I was really happy. I ended up putting my owl into the wrong category, so I wasn’t expecting to win anything,” she said.
She said it was nice to have her work displayed during the Seymour Show weekend.
“It was good knowing that I’d spent so much time doing something and people could actually go and see it,” Isla said.
The Year 11 student is gearing up to start her Year 12 subjects next year, and said she was currently enjoying doing VCE art subjects, as well as Design Fundamentals at TAFE.
She said she was keen on continuing her artistic ventures outside of school.
