From Tuesday, March 31, trains, trams and buses, both metro and V/Line, will be free every day until the end of April.
Premier Jacinta Allan said it was an effort to aid Victorians amid rising fuel prices.
“This is a temporary measure to help with the cost of living — it will take pressure off the pump and help you save,” she said.
“This won’t solve every problem, but it’s an immediate step to help Victorians right now while we keep working on new solutions to make Victoria more affordable.”
The state government has called the bid a temporary measure, rather than a permanent solution to cost-of-living demands.
It hopes to make travel more accessible and get more cars off the road.
“Fuel prices are rising, and Victorian families are feeling it — free public transport will make a real difference for all,” Public and Active Transport Minister Gabrielle Williams said.
“Our transport system can support this as a temporary measure, and it’s important to support Victorians right now.”
People travelling on public transport won’t need to touch on their myki cards, and machines won’t charge if they accidentally touch on.
Those travelling on V/Line coaches outside the myki network will need to book a free ticket to secure their seats, but people can travel on trains outside the network without a ticket.
Myki pass holders can contact the call centre at 1800 800 007 to pause their pass for a month or get a refund.
