A Catastrophic Fire Danger rating has been declared for Mitchell Shire for Friday, January 9 with Murrindindi Shire also affected under the North Central Fire District.
A Total Fire Ban is being enforced across the entire state for 24 hours beginning at 12.01am, meaning no fires can be lit or remain alight in the open air.
A severe heatwave warning has also been issued, with daytime temperatures forecast to reach the high 30s and low 40s.
Catastrophic Fire Danger ratings are rare and represent the most dangerous conditions possible.
Mitchell Shire Council is urging residents to stay informed and take action early.
Due to the rating, several council services will be closed, including the Seymour Visitor Centre, Resource Recovery Centres, landfill facilities and council-run kindergartens.
The Seymour Visitor Centre remains contactable on 5799 0233.
To beat the heat, residents can attend local pools.
The Seymour War Memorial Pool and Tallarook Outdoor Pool will both be open between 11am and 8pm.
