There was something more on the agenda during the lunch, and it was the discussion around president Allan Johnston hanging up the reins after a 15-year stint that has seen the Men’s Shed become what it is today.
The AGM will be held on August 18, where a new member will be elected to fill his shoes.
The banter was real, the laughs were loud, yet no-one was willing to raise their hand to take on the role.
Many unprintable quotes were shared from not only Allan, but also other members over the lively lunch, but one thing is for sure — Allan’s time has come to an end.
Among the jokes and sarcasm, Allan said the AGM would consist of a raise of hands, and if members received equal votes, a secret ballot would take place.
“It’s time for me to step back and let someone else cut the carrots in the kitchen,” he said.
While one member replied that Allan should have “cut himself up in the kitchen,” joking he was a bit of a “carrot” himself.
After three years of making the weekly trip from Barwon Heads to Tatura, Allan said it was time to hand the reins over to someone new.
His advice for the next president was simple.
"Have a thick skin."
The Men’s Shed continues to welcome new members, with the group encouraging anyone keen to join in the lively banter, friendship and hands-on activities to come along and be part of the community.
