From maintaining the golf course and bowling greens, to helping run events, serving on committees, and taking care of everything in between, volunteers play a role in almost every corner of the club.
Club president David Roberts said their contribution was not just practical, but deeply community-focused.
“Without volunteers, the club would face significant financial and operational challenges, but just as importantly, it would lose part of its identity as a welcoming community hub,” he said.
The club also benefits from the small but important tasks that often go unseen, like gardening, painting, repairs, preparing competitions, managing scorecards, and even ongoing efforts to deter corellas from damaging the greens.
While much of this work happens behind-the-scenes, David said it was what allowed members and visitors to enjoy a well-presented and smoothly run club.
The club recognises its volunteers through signage, newsletters, displays in the clubhouse and annual appreciation events including a volunteers’ lunch and end-of-year gatherings.
David said acknowledging that effort is important, especially as clubs across Australia face increasing challenges in attracting and retaining volunteers.
Looking ahead, he said building on that strong culture of volunteering was essential.
“Our volunteers are the foundation of the club — they truly make Hill Top what it is today,” David said.
“Without their dedication and countless hours of work, the standard of our facilities and the experience we offer members and visitors simply wouldn’t be possible.
“We are deeply grateful for everything they do and for all the staff who contribute to our success as well.”
More than just a sporting club, Hill Top Bowls and Golf Club continues to thrive as a community space shaped by the people who give their time to it every week.
