Winless start continues for Rochy

Rochester’s winless start to its Goulburn Valley League football season continued at the weekend as the Tigers were soundly beaten by Echuca at Moon Oval.

Rochy has had a tough schedule to begin its 2026 campaign, facing each of the other three sides who finished in the top four last year, with the latest being an Echuca side that entered round three with a perfect winning record intact.

The visitors showed why they’ve been one of the league’s best sides right from the off, kicking the first five goals of the game before Rochy halted the avalanche with one of its own before quarter-time.

The respite was only momentary for the Tigers, as the Murray Bombers kicked four of the next five in the second term, with their inaccuracy ensuring the margin didn’t blow out to astronomical levels, Echuca leading 9.13 (67) to 3.4 (22) at half-time.

Rochester seemed to use the main break to good effect, as its second-half display was much improved, the Tigers first matching Echuca with two goals apiece in the third quarter, though barely reducing the deficit.

The fourth period was the hosts’ best on the night, Ash Watson’s team kicking three goals to one to take some positives into this week, cutting the margin to five goals in the end, Echuca winning 12.14 (86) to 8.8 (56).

Rochester is now one of only three sides yet to taste victory after the opening three rounds, along with Euroa and Tatura, with the Tigers currently sitting 10th on the ladder.

In round four, one of those droughts could be broken when the Tigers are at home to Tatura in another night fixture.
