North of 600 competitors will take to Shepparton Sports Precinct for the Australian Mixed Ultimate Division Two Championships, held from April 12-14.
It’s the best of the rest across the country, right on our doorstep.
Thirty teams from Division Two will square off for the combined three-day event, bringing a healthy injection to the Shepparton economy while showcasing a fun and interesting sport.
City of Greater Shepparton Mayor Shane Sali said that hosting some of the best frisbee players in Australia was an exciting experience for the community.
“We are very excited to welcome Australia’s top Ultimate Frisbee athletes back to Greater Shepparton after last playing in our region in 2022,” he said.
“The open’s and women’s championships will see the very best male and female competitors using their strength and agility to sprint, leap and throw their way to victory, a lot more thrilling than your average backyard or park game.
“Ultimate Frisbee is a growing sport and we are proud to host them and invite them to experience all that Shepparton and Goulburn Valley have to offer.
“Having these athletes stay in the city for the three-day competition greatly benefits our visitor economy industries and has a positive impact on local businesses as they sleep, eat, explore and play in the region.”
So what is Ultimate Frisbee, and what does it look like?
It’s a non-contact sport played on a rectangular field, incorporating elements of netball, touch football and gridiron, with goals awarded for a pass that successfully finds another player in the end zone.
Australian Flying Disc Association chairman Simon Farrow was proud to bring the sport to Shepparton.
“These events will attract more than 600 athletes and staff to the local area and we are grateful for the support from Greater Shepparton City Council to assist us in hosting these major tournaments,” he said.
AFDA chief executive Maxwell Gratton built on Farrow’s statement, encouraging locals to come down and watch frisbee at the national level for free.
“There will be many great matches to see. It will be a great opportunity to witness the excitement of frisbee,” Gratton said.
