Mooroopna’s title at netball invitational

Mooroopna walked away from the Rochester Community Bank Netball Invitational Open with the title on Saturday.

Echuca had the best record after the preliminary rounds, winning five of its six matches and finishing ahead of both Mooroopna and Rochester.

The second and third qualifiers for the finals in the seven-team open tournament both won four of their six matches, which were played in seven-minute halves.

Rochester scored more goals in the preliminary rounds, but was ranked fourth in its defensive work.

Moama and Deniliquin both won three of their matches, drawing when they played one another, while Tatura and Stanhope finished at the bottom of the table.

Mooroopna beat Echuca in the final.

Bendigo league club Kangaroo Flat won the 17-and-under title after finishing second to Rochester in the preliminary rounds.

Rochester won seven and drew one of its eight qualifying matches, with Kangaroo Flat and Echuca both winning six games apiece in the nine-team underage component of the carnival.

Echuca scored the most goals of the nine teams (108), marginally ahead of the top two teams.

Moama finished with two wins from its eight matches in the tournament.

Nine teams were also involved in the 15-and-under division, Shepparton Swans dominant in scoring 110 goals from eight matches and allowing only 33 to be scored against them as they cruised to the title.

Rochester finished third — it and Echuca both having five wins for the tournament.
