Congupna’s roll towards the Murray Football League title continued at the weekend at the expense of Tongala.
The Blues welcomed The Road to Tongala Recreation Reserve and, aside from the first quarter, were no match for the undefeated leader and reigning champion.
The opening period was a tight one and Tonny went into the break with aspirations of a close contest, trailing 2.2 (14) to 3.5 (23).
Those hopes were quickly dashed in the second as Congupna slipped into gear and began to score freely.
Five goals and six behinds in the second period had The Road up 38 at the half and, while the third term was effectively a stalemate, a massive 10.7 in the final period had Congupna win 20.21 (141) to 5.6 (36).
Given the even keel of two of the four quarters, Tongala would feel aggrieved to have gone down by triple-figures, but the quality of the champion shone through.
Kyle Mueller logged his fourth game in a row with five or more goals, kicking seven to pave the Road to success, while Mitch Heywood’s two were the best of Tongala’s scorers.
With Tongala still to play each of the top four in its last six fixtures, Blues fans will have half an eye on next season as a post-season push looks out of reach in the final third of the year.
The Blues trail the finals places by three games with six to play.
After the general bye, a more favourable match-up comes Tonny’s way as the Blues face off with winless Barooga.
