On Sunday, local bowling enthusiasts enjoyed a day of exciting bowls from the teams participating in the CVBD State Fours at Moama Bowling Club.
In a drama filled finish both the women’s and men’s finals were decided with the final bowl.
Earlier in the day the semi-finals of the women were played with Melissa Roberts (Moama/Deniliquin) defeating Beryl Murray (Mathoura) and Joan Moss (Mathoura/Deniliquin RSL/ City of Echuca) defeating Gayle Kerr (City of Echuca).
The final produced some intense bowling from all players as the game went shot for shot.
The Roberts rink comprising Linda Harris, Merrilyn Rehe and Marilyn Stephenson were leading 7-6 after 11 ends in a closely fought tussle before gaining a slight break of 10-6.
Joan Moss and her team of Ros Neil, Jenny Tonta and Chris Taylor refused to lay down and clawed their way back to trail by three shots on the final end.
With the large crowd on tenterhooks, it was Moss to draw a close bowl and figure in the measure to give the team four shots and victory 13-12.
There was a similar result in the men’s final between Kevin Brennan (s), Barry Brennan, Glen Dorward, Jim Hogan (Moama) and another Moama rink of Alan Buzza, Richard Blain, Alan Jones and Merv Harvey (s).
The Harvey rink grabbed three shots on the very first end and kept the opposition at bay to lead 10-4 in the early stanza.
However, the experience of the Brennan rink combined to reduce the leeway with some telling bowls and take a slender 16-15 lead on the sixteenth end of the 18-end final.
Brennan was able to win a two shot measure to lead 18-15 on the final end.
The final end was almost unbelievable in the eyes of a true believer.
Holding one or possibly two shots, Harvey requiring three shots to force an extra end or four to win delivered a weighted drive to disturb the head.
Making contact and when the dust had settled his team finished up with five shots to win the championship 20-18.
The Joan Moss rink and the Merv Harvey four will represent the CVBD in the regional final.
