The Dolphins are keeping options open ahead of Saturday's away trip to Wellington to play the Warriors with five-eighth Kodi Nikorima suspended.
Nikorima accepted a two-match ban for a hip-drop tackle on Penrith hooker Mitch Kenny in the 23-22 loss in Darwin on Friday night.
The Dolphins trialled No.6 options at Monday training with Jake Averillo, Kurt Donoghoe and Plath slotting in at five-eighth.
Plath was superb at hooker against the Panthers and can also play lock.
When pushed about who he would like to see at No.6, forward Felise Kaufusi said: "I like Kurt Donoghoe at No.13 or off the bench".
"So I will go Plath," Kaufusi said.
"He is so reliable and will get the job done if he is put there."
Lock Morgan Knowles trained on his own and is in some doubt with a calf complaint while Donoghoe is hopeful of a return from a hamstring injury.
Pocket rocket Trai Fuller trained at right centre for a lot of Monday's session and is likely to get game time against the Warriors.
The Dolphins wanted to get Fuller on the field against the Panthers but the sin-binning of Nikorima changed their plans.
"Trai Fuller is a fan favourite and wherever we can put him in it will benefit the team," Kaufusi said.
Fuller, whose best position is fullback, has only played nine minutes off the bench in NRL this year and that was in the round-one loss to South Sydney.
Maroons coach Billy Slater has nominated Plath in the past as an Origin bolter and Kaufusi, who has played 17 Origins, said his teammate was made for the arena.
"He is Mr Reliable," Kaufusi said.
"He is a tough bugger and willing to do the hard work. Origin is all about the small moments ... and he is there filling the space and never giving up. He fits that Origin arena."
Dolphins second-rower Kulikefu Finefeuiaki, who was in the Maroons' extended squad last year, is also nearing an Origin debut.
"He has been one of our best forwards this year with the way he carries, the way he kick-chases and he is not afraid of hard work," Kaufusi said.
"That will put him in good stead if Billy is looking at him."
The Dolphins trailed 18-0 at halftime against Penrith but led 22-18 late in the match. Kaufusi said it would be vital to start fast against the Warriors as the Dolphins aim to end a three-game losing streak.
