Inspector Cam Sanderson brings to the role not only 36 years’ policing experience, but also knowledge of the area, having enjoyed visits to his grandparents’ dairy farm in Waaia as a child.
Insp Sanderson has worked in Melbourne, including at Collingwood, Preston, Flemington and Thomastown, as well as in prosecutions and as a detective.
He has worked with the Northern Territory Police — in Darwin, Tiwi Islands, Arnhem Land and Alice Springs — and spent 12 months with the Australian Federal Police.
Most recently, he was part of the Joint Anti Child Exploitation Team, was the local area commander at Brimbank and has been a detective senior sergeant at the offender management division.
Insp Sanderson’s goals for his time as the local area commander for Greater Shepparton are to build strong and trusted relationships with members of the community, as well as reducing crime and road trauma across Greater Shepparton.
Another key focus will be on early intervention and long-term harm reduction strategies to target repeat offenders and support victims.
Insp Sanderson said the police in Greater Shepparton did a fantastic job, and he was looking forward to supporting them in their roles.
“Regional policing has unique challenges; I’ll be visiting the police stations in our patch over the next few weeks to meet more of our local police who are the experts in this area, to get a better understanding of their challenges and focus areas,” he said.
“I also look forward to meeting local stakeholders and community partners who too play a role in community safety.”
