Man caught driving at 134km/h in main street

A man was driving at more than 130km/h while racing another car down Shepparton’s main street, a court has heard.

Jordan Boxtel pleaded guilty in Shepparton Magistrates’ Court to driving at a dangerous speed and using an unregistered vehicle.

The court heard Boxtel was driving a Holden GTS sedan at 134km/h in Wyndham St at 1.20am on March 15.

Police spotted the car being driven at more than twice the speed limit in the 60km/h zone between Wilmot Rd and Roberts St, with prosecutor Rachel Elliot telling the court there was another vehicle in the left lane “keeping speed” with Boxtel’s car.

“It is clear he was attempting to race the other vehicle,” Ms Elliot said.

The court also heard the registration of Boxtel’s car had expired in January.

When stopped by police, Boxtel told them he did not have a reason for speeding, and that he was not aware his car was unregistered, Ms Elliot sad.

Representing himself in court, Boxtel said he had a house in the Shepparton area and another in Queensland.

His driver’s licence was a Queensland one that said he was from Smithfield, which is north of Cairns.

Boxtel told the court he worked as a fly-in fly-out operator in the mines in Queensland and would struggle to work without a driver’s licence.

Magistrate Amina Bhai chastised Boxtel over his driving.

“It should be pretty clear the risks involved,” she said.

In fining him $2000, she also said she needed to deter others from doing the same thing.

Boxtel was also disqualified from obtaining a driver’s licence in Victoria for two years, with Ms Bhai saying she suspected there would be “flow-on effects” from her ruling for his Queensland driver’s licence.
