Here are 10 things you may not have known about sandwiches as the world celebrates the two bits of bread with filling in between on November 3, World Sandwich Day.

1 John Mantagu, the fourth Earl of Sandwich, was credited with inventing the sandwich in 1762 when he didn’t want to leave the gambling table and demanded two bits of bread with roast beef in between so he could continue playing and eat with his hands.

2 In the USA an extraordinary 300 million sandwiches are consumed every day.
