Vegemite turns 100, maybe?

Celebration deliberation: Vegemite turns 100 with plenty of fanfare, but according to a commemorative jar from the 1990s, its 100th birthday was last year.

The spread that Aussies have known and loved for generations turns 100 on October 25. Or is it 101?

Seymour man John Ross was not so sure of the centenary birthday celebrations when he looked at two commemorative jars he had collected celebrating Vegemite’s 70th and 80th anniversaries.

The jar from 1992 marked Vegemite’s 70th anniversary.

The jar from 2003 marked the spread’s 80th birthday.

Somehow, in that 11 years that was supposed to be 10, Vegemite’s inception date changed from 1992 to 1923.

So, did we miss its centenary?

Deborah Callister, the granddaughter of Vegemite inventor Cyril Callister, asked Liza Robinson from the Cyril Callister Pop-up Museum.

Liza believes the earlier printing was an error and 1923 is officially recognised as the year of Vegemite’s invention.

Vegemite is now owned by Bega Cheese, which has been approached for comment.
