The Department of Energy, Environment and Climate Action provides domestic firewood from fallen trees and forest management works, balancing access with safety, forest values, biodiversity, and cultural heritage.
“People can collect up to two cubic metres per person per day with a maximum of 16 cubic metres per household per financial year as long as they collect from designated firewood collection areas during a firewood season,” Forest Fire Management Victoria Deputy Chief Fire Officer, Aaron Kennedy said.
“It's important Victorians plan their firewood needs early as it can take at least 8–12 months for firewood collected during the collection seasons to be dry enough to burn safely and effectively.”
Collecting wood outside designated areas, chopping down trees, or taking vehicles off formed roads is illegal. The Conservation Regulator and Parks Victoria are targeting illegal firewood collection through Taskforce Ironbark. Fines for breaking the rules start at $750, with serious offences carrying a maximum penalty of $9,879 and/or one year in prison.
The Victorian Government offers energy support and concessions for low-income individuals who rely on firewood or need assistance with energy costs. These include the Energy Assistance Program, Energy Bill Relief Fund, and Non-Mains Utility Relief Grant.
