The Victorian Department of Transport and Planning carried out minor works throughout August to prepare the intersection for activation, with further rail signalling works completed in September.
City of Greater Shepparton Acting Mayor Geoff Akers said it was terrific to see the lights switched on.
“It’s an intersection we’ve been worried about for some time so it is great to see progress there,” he said.
“We’ve been lobbying for this for almost five years.
“With the biggest attractions on at SAM at the moment, it is good that we can all feel a bit safer on that corner,” he said.
State Member for Shepparton Kim O’Keeffe said the long-awaited switch-on would improve safety at the busy intersection.
“I have seen firsthand the confusion that drivers experience while navigating the intersection,” she said.
“The lights were put there for a reason and that is to increase the intersection’s safety.”
