Every year the Rochester Golf Club dedicates the first round of the men's championship in memory of John (Jock) O'Connor.
Jock was a larger-than-life figure around the club for many years; a captain, committee member and hardworking volunteer. Who could ever forget those trips away to the many Victorian Country Sand Scrape Championships?
On Saturday, Jock's widow Judy presented his trophy to a delighted Richard Feuk for the best nett score.
Feuk's 71 edged out Graham Willis (72) and Jake Wright (73).
In ideal winter conditions, Wright finished as an odds on favorite to win his second consecutive A title as his six over 77 is nine shots ahead of Liam Keenan (86). Peter Anderson (87) and Shane Bywaters (88) were the next best.
Willis (89) is well ahead of the B grade pack of Mark Walsh (95), Feuk (96) and Bruce Bryant (98).
Ball winners for nearest the pins were Bryant (Evans Welding 3rd) and Rob Ralph (president Ian Clark's 8th) while Chris Eeles won the super pin jackpot on 12.
Last Wednesday, Peter Anderson combined with Gavin Houlihan (38-6-nett 32) to win the two-person ambrose event over the back-nine from Kevin McCormack and Laurie Radley (37-4.5-nett 32.5).
The first round of the ladies championship was also held last week with current champion Louise Williams (92) leading Dianne Gallagher by two shots. Williams (73) and Gallagher's (74) were also the best nett scores on the day.
Williams was the closest on REM Sheds 3rd and Jenny Major's 5th, Karen Taylor was closest on Carole Prigg's 8th and straightest on the 10th while Gallagher took out the best shot on Marg Knight's 16th.
Limited tickets have been printed for Rochester's $2500 major raffle to be drawn at the "Tradies Fore Trout" four-person ambrose event to be held on Sunday, August 1. Hit off from 11am.
All enquiries to president Ian Clark on 0409 548 842 or captain Des Gallagher on 0428 121 369.
