Doug Mcqueen on one of the most dangerous sections of road in Moira Shire.
It’s a small step in the right direction after readers recently identified Katamatite-Yarrawonga Rd as the Shire’s most dangerous road.

A Department of Transport and Planning spokesperson has confirmed that, in the coming weeks, maintenance teams will distribute advanced warning signs and conduct repairs.
“We are aware of hazards at this location,” the spokesperson said.
Katamatite resident, Doug Mcqueen knows the road well and described it as “disgraceful and deteriorating all the time”.
He said the lack of warning signs was “neglect” and he was worried that someone was going to die driving along the road the way it is.
Moira Shire Council chair administrator, Dr Graeme Emonson said the lack of focus on repairing basic potholes and defects on regional roads in a timely way, was a significant concern.
He said the council shared the community’s concerns about Katamatite-Yarrawonga Rd, and Telford St (Murray Valley Highway) in Yarrawonga, which was clearly identified as the Shire’s second most concerning stretch of road.
“Council reports the condition of these roads to the Department of Transport and Planning regularly,” Dr Emonson said.
“We encourage residents to also report these matters, including via apps like Snap, Send, Solve.
“The more reports, the more chance of action to repair the roads.”
Our roads had their time in parliament last week when Member for Northern Victoria, Wendy Lovell urged the Minister for Roads and Road Safety, Ros Spence, to take urgent action to repair all damaged sections of the Murray Valley Highway.

Ms Lovell told the parliament that Murray Valley Highway, a key conduit for freight vehicles and tourists visiting the Murray, was among the worst-rated roads in RACV’s analysis of AusRAP data, which identified 52 dangerous highway sections in Victoria.
“Sections of the Murray Valley Highway have been left damaged for years, and are putting drivers’ lives in danger,” Ms Lovell said.
“The Minister must act immediately to repair all damaged sections of the Murray Valley Highway.”
She said that despite ‘road repair blitzes’ in the last two budgets, the government had failed to significantly improve the state of the regional road network.
Moira Shire Council recently secured a $544,000 grant from the Federal Government to upgrade the intersection of Old Wilby Road and Channel Road near Yarrawonga.
The notorious intersection recorded five crashes between 2019 and 2023, three of which resulted in serious injuries.
Readers welcomed the announcement but pointed out the urgent need for roundabouts at the entrance/exit to Bunnings, Aldi and Coles in Yarrawonga, and the Hogans Rd exit onto the highway.
The second most concerning stretch of road in Moira Shire, according to readers, was the section of the Murray Valley Highway (Telford St) between McDonald’s and Bunnings in Yarrawonga.
The Victorian Government is responsible for 23,000km of roads.
A spokesperson said maintenance crews regularly inspected the arterial road network to monitor road conditions and identify areas that require necessary repairs.
The 2026-27 budget has allocated $1.04 billion to rebuild, repair and resurface roads with 70 per cent of those funds going to roads in regional Victoria.
Road users and the wider community can report hazards on our road network by calling 13 11 70.
