This move had the support of the Victorian Teachers’ Union, a branch of which exists at Lockington.
The stoppage was designed to draw attention to fears held by the Australian Teachers’ Federation that the budget would reduce spending on education by up to 25 per cent and reduce the planning period from three years, as at present, to one of only six months.
At a meeting held at Lockington, it was decided not to stop work.
Instead, the local branch urged the community to support them in protesting by telegram, letter or any other way possible, to members of the Australian Parliament.

With Daylight Saving starting this weekend, many district dairy farmers will have their work cut out for them.
With Daylight Saving starting two months early this year to accommodate for the Sydney Olympic Games, dairy farmers will have to cope with the normal problems of the time change as well as extra inconveniences.
For dairy farmers, this is the time that their cows are calving, and they will also have to deal with problems of milk fever difficulties in the event of darker mornings.
United Dairyfarmers of Victoria senior vice-president and Lockington dairy farmer Paul Weller said the UDV was against the early introduction of Daylight Saving.
Member for Rodney Noel Maughan is also opposed to the extension of the Daylight Saving period.

Callan O’Riley is officially a Victorian Junior Motocross Champion.
Not a bad feat for the 14-year-old from Ballendella.
Racing in the 85/150 BW C class over the four round series, Callan won nine of his 11 starts, only losing the two due to ‘‘crashing out’’.
Held in Korumburra, Colac, Cobram and then Blue Rock, the prestigious series was a must-win for the youngster who added nine new plaques to his forever growing trophy cabinet.
Callan completed three races at each stage, which consisted of a 10-minute time trial before they would complete an additional lap.
‘‘I would race against about 30 kids each competition,’’ he said.
‘‘I probably would have had a clean slate if I didn’t crash a couple of times.’’

Meg Doller loves Elmore.
So much so, she is leading the charge to make it more beautiful.
She wants to make her ‘‘small town sexy’’; a term she adopted from Kim Huston after attending a conference in May.
Huston’s book Small Town Sexy explores the art of revitalising small towns and communities – something Ms Doller was keen to share with the Elmore community on her return.
Two months later, four working bees have already made major changes down by the Campaspe River, and it is only getting better.
Ms Doller was blown away by the interest of the community and their readiness to help.
‘‘So many people want to make a change and revitalise our town,’’ she said.
