Competitors in this year’s Lions Junior Public Speaking competition did an outstanding job.
In a fantastic day and a wonderful project, Junior Public Speaking was once again held at the Yarrawonga Lions Clubrooms, with eight students participating from Sacred Heart and Yarrawonga P–12.

Four Grade 3/4 students, Arlo Dean, Dasie Gangie, Argus Douglas, and Zali Bolton, spoke on the topic, “If you could go on a holiday anywhere in Australia, where would you go and why?”
Their chosen destinations included Uluru, Sydney, and home.
Zali won this age group, with Angus named runner-up.
Grade 5/6 students, Lizzie Thomas, Paddy Schwarz, Alexandra Bridgeman-Aitkens, and Farley Simmons spoke on the topic, “If you could have dinner with anyone in the world, past or present, who would it be, why, and what would you serve?”
Their choices were (Diamonds defender) Jo Weston, Charles Darwin, Trudy Ederle (the first woman to swim across the English Channel), and David Attenborough.
The students did an amazing job sharing their imagined dinner conversations and meals.

The Grade 5/6 students also had 10 minutes to prepare an impromptu speech on, “If you were the school principal for the day, what would you change and why?”.
There were many suggestions, but it is clear our schools are in good hands.
Farley Simmons was this year’s winner, with Alexandra Bridgeman-Aitkens named runner-up.
Congratulations to all the students, who spoke extremely well and clearly put a great deal of research into their chosen topics.

They did an amazing job, commenting on the high calibre of the speeches, noting how close the competition was, and offering students helpful feedback for improvement.

This event would not have been possible without the support of Lions members: MC, John Weinert, who kept everyone entertained with his dad jokes during pauses in the program; timekeeper, Denis Griffiths; Ollie Tufvesson, who managed the paperwork and liaised with the schools; and our catering team, who provided the Lions speciality of sausage in bread and cupcakes, which proved very popular with everyone.
