The last Lockington Mural Competition was held in 2021, with the winning artworks installed throughout the Lockington Pump Track community precinct.
After years of exposure to the elements, the murals have since deteriorated, prompting the Business Centre Committee of Management to launch a new competition to refresh the townscape.
Committee president Jennie Keele said the organisation was keen to see artists of all ages get involved.
“We would particularly love to see some local artists involved, but will warmly welcome anyone who would like to help brighten our town,” she said.
“The mural competition created plenty of interest when it was held five years ago, and we hope that the recent mural completed by Jimmy Dvate on the Business Centre building might inspire some of our most creative residents to put their hand up for this year’s project.”
Lockington Neighbourhood House will co-ordinate the competition on behalf of Lockington District Business Centre, with $1000 up for grabs for the winning entry and $500 for the runner-up.
Up to six artists will be selected to take part in the competition, which will run from Thursday, September 10 to Sunday, September 13 at the Lockington Community Centre.
Participants will create 2.5m by 1.5m murals over the four-day event, with the finished works set to replace the ageing paintings currently displayed around the pump track precinct.
All backing boards and paints will be supplied, with participants only needing to bring their own brushes, rollers and other painting equipment.
Registrations will close on Monday, August 10 and are open to artists of all ages.
