The Newstead artist is fresh blood in the annual festival and said she was looking forward to the week-long paint-off.
Kristin said she had always wanted to be a part of the Sheffield Mural Festival in Tasmania and was presented with the perfect opportunity in Rochester.
‘‘I had taken my granddaughter on a pony ride out the other side of Rochester and we had to have a toilet stop, and Rochester was the closest spot,’’ she said.
‘‘We were walking past all of these murals and I thought ‘I’m going to give it a go’.’’
Having only lived in central Victoria for ‘‘a couple of years’’, Kristin said her inspiration for the ‘our country life theme’ came from where she’s currently living.
‘‘There was a deciduous tree out the front of a Newstead cafe and it had red pom-poms on it — and so I had the idea of yarn bombing,’’ she said.
While this is Kristin’s first appearance in Rochester for the mural festival, she has painted a number of them throughout the past decade.
‘‘I painted a toilet block in Croydon and it kept getting graffitied so I would have to keep coming and re-painting it, until it got burnt down,’’ she said.
‘‘It was a bit of a shame until they built a new one and I painted the A-Z of Australian animals, I liked it a lot better — I prefer painting nature scenes rather than (depicting) people.’’
Kristin will be at the ‘meet the artists’ dinner on February 22, where all artists will be unveiling their murals they will be painting.
