The Federal Government “has become blind to our situation”, according to a leading Deniliquin businessman.

Responding to shift and staff reductions at the Deniliquin and Leeton rice mills, Deniliquin Freighters director Russell Tait said SunRice and the Deniliquin community “are victims of water policy”.
“The underlying issue is clear ... you need water to grow rice. It (the SunRice job losses) is having a big effect on our towns.”
Mr Tait said his company’s operations remain steady for now, but the community will feel the consequences.
Deni Freighters had a long association with SunRice, carting its product.
When asked if the job losses had affected the transport company, Mr Tait replied “not at this stage, really”.
“The mill will still produce for the domestic market,” he said.
“SunRice has become a victim and it (job losses) will have a knock on effect in Deni.”
Mr Tait said domestic carting will continue, but warned the town is already feeling the strain of ongoing water policy decisions.
