Mayor Daniel Mackrell said dry vegetation in drought-affected areas meant an increased fire risk, and residents should be thinking ahead now.
“We don’t want tragedy to strike our shire, so we’re asking residents to make sure they have a fire plan, and their families, homes and properties are prepared,” he said.
“There are a number of steps you can take, and one of those is to reduce the fire risk around your home by removing garden waste from your property — and council can help with that.”
To support residents’ clean-up efforts, the council is offering free green waste disposal from Monday, October 20 to close of business on Sunday, November 2 at the Mt Scobie, Rushworth and Colbinabbin resource recovery centres.
Residents can drop off up to 3m³ of non-contaminated garden waste, including leaves, branches, grass clippings and other garden organics, free of charge.
General rubbish, commercial quantities of green waste and green waste that is contaminated with other waste, including plastic, glass and metal, will not be accepted for free disposal.
The 2025/26 Fire Danger Period in Campaspe Shire is set to begin on Monday, November 3, and run until the start of May next year.
