The North Central Climate Change Strategy is aimed at co-ordinating climate action across the region.
The North Central Catchment Management Authority strategy and partnerships executive manager Rohan Hogan is heading the strategy, and said it would guide investment, planning and on-ground action across the region.
“This new region-wide strategy is the guiding document to help the region protect our natural resources from the biggest threat they have ever seen,” he said.
Council director infrastructure and environment Kate Lemon said council welcomed the strategy as a useful regional framework.
Council has lodged a funding application to complete a regional climate risk assessment to further understand the climate risks facing the region.
“The Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organisation indicates the Campaspe region will observe longer, hotter and drier summers with increased frequency of extreme rainfall events,” Ms Lemon said.
Council is already undertaking flood studies and mitigation planning across Rochester, Echuca, Torrumbarry and Kyabram, while identifying community spaces that could be used during extreme weather.
Ms Lemon said council was also improving the energy efficiency of its facilities and working towards net zero by 2035.
Council’s relief, resilience and recovery program includes the First 72 Hours emergency preparedness program and an emergency dashboard providing centralised weather and emergency information.
Ms Lemon advised residents and landholders to share local knowledge, stay informed and prepared, and take practical steps such as improving energy efficiency in their daily lives.
“Local knowledge is vital to building Campaspe’s resilience,” she said.
