Rochester RSL sub-branch president Cameron Lovering said the branch leaned heavily on a dedicated group of long-serving veterans, some of whom had spent decades serving on the committee.
“Some of our members are getting older, getting tired, and I think they need a bit of a break,” Mr Lovering said.
He urged community members with a background in administration, finance or event management to consider putting their hand up to volunteer, lending support to committee duties and landmark commemorations including Anzac Day and Remembrance Day.
Mr Lovering said relatives of veterans could also be eligible to join, offering another way for the community to give back to those who had served.
“If you’re in a position where you think you’ve got something to offer the RSL in a voluntary capacity, perhaps there’s a position on the committee which could benefit from you,” he said.
“You can serve your community, serve the veteran cohort and help keep alive the commemoration of those who have gone before us.”
The call comes as the branch continues its work supporting veterans through funds raised by the annual Poppy Appeal.
Mr Lovering said half of all funds raised locally stayed within the Rochester branch, with the other 50 per cent directed to RSL Victoria to address more complex veteran welfare requirements.
Mr Lovering said the Rochester RSL had recently approved financial assistance for a flood-affected veteran still working to repair their home, while other funds had enabled veterans and their partners to access much-needed respite during challenging health periods.
“We are still supporting veterans in our community who were not only impacted by their service, but are also impacted by the 2022 flood events,” he said.
The support reflected the generosity of the local community, which had contributed strongly to recent Poppy Appeals, he said.
“It warms my heart (that) the community generosity helps the RSL help our veterans,” Mr Lovering said.
He urged anyone keen to volunteer or learn more about membership to reach out to their local RSL branch and find out how they can make a difference.
