Avenel kids experience Taungurung traditions on tour

Over the Easter holidays, kids in Avenel were treated to a tour of Taungurung Country.

At Euroa Arboretum, Uncle Shane Monk and Bonnie Cavanagh introduced attendees to Taungurung culture, through a smoking ceremony, a guided walk, sampling of bush tucker and artwork.

Facilitated by community group Avenel Active, the tour was made possible with funding support from Strathbogie Shire Council’s Community Strengthening grants program.

“We would like to thank all of the children, parents and volunteers who took part,” Avenel Active volunteer Anne Douglas said.

“It was a wonderful opportunity for people of all ages to learn more about First Nations culture and the Country we live in.”

The tour was guided by wawa biik Taungurung Cultural Experiences, which is owned and operated by the Taungurung Land and Waters Council.

“This was the second wawa biik cultural experience we have been fortunate to offer to Avenel residents,” Avenel Active treasurer Helen Gwilliam said.

“We would like to thank council and wawa biik Taungurung Cultural Experiences for their support for this holiday activity.”
