Nine-year-old Charles and eight-year-old Jasmine Watson fall into the second category — they have been preparing for Rochester’s Great Northern Show since last year’s ended.
Having been “caught out” when the show came around last year, they made sure they were ready to go this time.
On their walk to school they have been keeping their eyes peeled for seed pods dropped from the trees lining the footpath.
They have gathered enough to each enter their seed pod collections this year.
But that is just one of the many crafts laid out on their kitchen table patiently waiting for judging day, including paintings, Lego, a wooden man and much more.
They have had success at the show before — Jasmine won the Miss Tiny Tot two years in a row and this year is moving up into the Junior Show Girl category, and they have both done well with their Lego and other crafts.
This year Jasmine is pinning her main hopes on a brown fluffy owl, while Charles thinks his eggs are his best bet, although they have taken a bit of time to organize — with only one chook laying white eggs, he is still waiting to reach a dozen.
Of course, the best-dressed eggs will be another tight contest. Charles is dressing his up as minions, from his favourite movie, Despicable Me.
Their hard work will pay off with a fun day at the kids’ carnival, bumping around in the dodgem cars and taking a camel ride, but there is one thing at the front of the Charles’s mind: “Fairy floss.”
Rochester’s Great Northern Show will be held at the Rochester Recreation Reserve next Friday and Saturday, February 21 and 22.
