Ater "Elia" Good, 16, was gunned down while walking in Fitzroy in Melbourne's inner north after midnight on January 3.
Nineteen-year-old Abdijalil Abdirahman Warsame from Heidelberg West, in Melbourne's northeast, was one of four men charged with Ater's murder, and on Tuesday applied for bail in the Victorian Supreme Court.
Ater had been walking with a friend when a car allegedly driven by the accused stopped adjacent to them and two gunshots were fired from the vehicle, Justice Michael O'Connell said.
One bullet struck the 16-year-old in the throat, damaging his jugular vein, causing him and his friend to run in separate directions.
Ater collapsed metres from the Fitzroy Police Station, with Detective Acting Inspector Brett Meadows telling reporters at the time an officer working inside heard the gunshots and rushed to the scene to find the victim, who was unable to be revived.
The car was later found incinerated.
Police believe the shooting is linked to the stabbings of two men in Carlton three days earlier.
Prosecutors alleged Warsame had a "long association" with the HTV youth gang and their bad blood with rival gang 6z flared up after some associates were allegedly assaulted on New Year's Eve.
Members of 6z had stopped outside their hospital and taunted HTV associates following the assault, Justice O'Connell said.
The judge referred to recorded conversations which Warsame allegedly said "I need a gun, bro", and CCTV footage which allegedly showed him at different locations in the car used on the night of the shooting.
Warsame allegedly admitted being involved in the shooting to an associate and his brother, telling the latter that "this isn't anyone else's fault".
His bail application rested on his lack of criminal history, prospects of employment, a medical condition rendering him vulnerable in custody and significant delay to trial.
His mother was prepared to put up two properties worth $1.7 million, including the family home, as bail guarantee, the judge said.
But Justice O'Connell denied bail due to the nature and seriousness of the charge, and the unacceptable risk if released back into the community.
"His association with HTV and the ongoing conflict with other youth gangs remains real," he said.
The teenage victim's basketball club Collingwood All Stars, with whom he played for five years, remembered him as a quiet boy who loved basketball and worked hard to do the best he could for his teams.
Omar Omar, 21, Shakiib Farah Abdulkadir, 20, and Sella Rabih have also been charged with Ater's murder.
