The 60-year-old actress who is married to businessman Francois-Henri Pinault, says she doesn't try to maintain unrealistic beauty standards.
"I don't try too hard because I suffer when I do that. You try less hard once you're happily married. Because now when I really try hard, he goes, 'Wow,'" she told Interview magazine.
"If you're too beautiful every day, you wake up one day looking terrible, and he goes, 'Whoa, what happened to her?', she said.
"But if you don't make the effort every day, he gets used to the not-best version. And then when you get ready, you teach them to love you for who you are, not for how you look."
Despite this, Hayek explained her style had evolved over the years.
"It used to be jeans. Now I like flowy black silk pants. You can never go wrong with those, really low."
Meanwhile, Hayek previously confessed to suffering "imposter syndrome" before posing for the Sports Illustrated Swimsuit Issue.
The actress appeared on the cover of the well-known magazine - but Hayek, who was 58 at the time, admitted to feeling anxious about the prospect of posing in a bikini.
"I said 'yes' and then when it was time to do it, I tried to back out. I said, 'No,' because the bathing suits never fit me, how am I gonna do this? There's nothing my size - I always suffer," she told the Today show.
The brunette beauty - who launched her own line of cosmetics, skincare, and haircare products, called Nuance, back in 2011 - said: "I still can't believe it".
"I remember when I was young and hot, I used to look at this magazine. I wanted to see who was the new gorgeous model, the new girl of the moment. And it never crossed my mind that I could be on that cover because they didn't look like me," she said.
"My body's not necessarily the model type and I never thought that was a possibility. And for it to happen when I'm 58? It's really shocking."
