Best known for her hit Running Up That Hill and the cult classic Wuthering Heights, Bush has inspired generations of fans with her distinctive voice, theatrical performances and offbeat imagination.
Now, a one-woman show blending cabaret and comedy is celebrating the singer - and has made its way back to Australia.
"The reason to make the show, what first inspired us, was her absence," co-creator Sarah-Louise Young said.
Young and her collaborator, Russell Lucas, began working on the show in 2013, when Bush had not performed live since 1979.
"You've got this incredible fan base who loved the music, and she kept making music, but she was never there to perform it," Young said.
"We wanted to explore a communal experience of enjoying Kate Bush, given that she wasn't doing it herself."
Young is not a "conventional tribute actor" and does not impersonate the singer.
Instead, she draws on the essence of Bush, diving into the songs, mythology and devoted fandom surrounding her.
But halfway through developing the show, Bush announced her return to the stage, performing a 22-date residency at London's Hammersmith Apollo.
"We actually stopped making the show," Young said.
"As fans, we were thrilled, but as theatre makers, we thought: 'This doesn't feel right, to pop up in the same year that she's coming back'."
Young was worried that people would think they were "cashing in on her return", so they sat on it before bringing it back in 2019.
Despite the detour, Young said the heart of the show had remained the same: a celebration of being a Kate Bush fan when the artist herself was absent.
"There's a guilty pleasure and delicious playfulness about being able to celebrate her in all of her idiosyncrasy as well as her profound insight on the human condition," Young said.
"It's a very loving, playful, communal invitation to celebrate her music, told through the eyes of her fans."
The enduring appeal of Bush is helped by the fact that she's shrouded in "mystique", with a live sighting of the singer being "a very rare occurrence".
"She wasn't remotely interested in being Kate Bush, the superstar. Everything she gave us was through her music," Young said.
Since its creation, An Evening Without Kate Bush has clocked up more than 400 performances to about 80,000 people worldwide.
"It makes us feel part of something, and that feels quite important right now, to feel part of something bigger than ourselves, and something that's positive, rather than designed to divide us," Young said.
Young said she doesn't know how a "little show we made in our living room" has lasted for so long, or how it has toured Australia more than once.
This time, Young is performing the show in Melbourne until Sunday, before heading to Brisbane for shows from October 21 to 24.
She will perform in Brunswick Heads on October 25 before Sydney shows on October 27 and 28.
