It was a night full of ups and downs, but the school still managed to come out on top in their eyes.
‘‘Being finalists in itself is an amazing achievement for a school our size. Most schools that we were competing against had a full-time environment studies teacher to lead the work,’’ principal Robyn MacLean said.
‘‘Our fellow finalists were Carrum Primary School and St Columbus Primary School.’’
Carrum Primary school came out winners of the category, but this didn’t get the Colbinabbin students down.
As a five star school, Colbinabbin were asked to provide a display for the ‘showcase’ and reports say it created a great deal of interest.
The students were invited on stage to be interviewed by the MC, War on Waste host, Craig Reucassel.
‘‘Unfortunately, Craig didn’t ask us the questions that Sustainability Victoria told us to plan for. Nevertheless, everyone handled the interview on stage, under lights, really well,’’ Mrs MacLean said.
They were interviewed during the showcase section of the day by TV host, Sally Williams and school captain Bella O’Dwyer was also interviewed by a student from Carrum Primary for their school radio station.
‘‘So although we did not bring home the major prize, we need to be incredibly proud of all that we have achieved. Of course, the big picture is that we are making generational change,’’ Mrs MacLean said.
‘‘Our aim is that people consider the impact of their choices and actions on the environment over convenience and economics.’’
As a finalist in the school of the year category, Colbinabbin Primary School received a prize of $250 which will be spent by the Green Team on one of the initiatives on their action plan.
