Golf report

January 30, 2018

Rochester Golf Club’s Bruce Major has carried on his solid form with a fine 43 points to finish second in last week’s stableford B grade.

Rich River’s stableford event last week saw Des Gallagher playing good golf to finish third on 40 points after his 38 the previous week.

Ap Kuiper was the next best for the Rochester crew with 35. The club will be hoping the weather improves for the next round of the GMGA Summer four-ball to be played at Shepparton on Sunday. Teams are to meet at Peter Anderson’s for a 7am departure.

The club thanks Garry Charnas, Graham and Raylee Willis, Harry Jenkins, Des Gallagher and the other volunteers for cleaning up, spraying and mowing the course over the last few weeks.

Club spokesman Peter Anderson said all the club is hoping for now is ‘‘good solid rain’’ to boost the course, which has died off due to the hot conditions.

This hot weather is playing havoc with the golf.

The Monday Niners didn’t hold a comp. but several keen players played a social round.

Wednesday Ladies were in much the same situation with a small field. What is that saying about Mad Dogs and Englishmen going out in the midday sun? That was us.

The dueling duo are into it again. Shirley McAsey (56-171/2-381/2) took the honours from Florrie Bickley. She also won the straightest drive 3rd, Panda (oops) Florrie had NTP 5th, and Shirley scored the least putts.

The raffle went to June Gibbs.

Campaspe played their usual Australia Day event. The numbers were a little disappointing, blame the heat.

Men’s winner was John Oakley (54-17-37) just ahead of Kevin McCormack (47-9-38). Rod McAsey claimed the straightest drive 9th, Kevin (15) won the putting on a count back from Ray Peake. Ray also won the meat tray from Cottoms.

Ladies winner Florrie Bickley (55-141/2-47). Shirley McAsey was runner up.

Shirley won the putting on a count back from Florrie. Straightest Drive 3rd went to Naida Belot.

President Rod McAsey welcomed Australia Day President, Bryan Griffiths and invited him to present the Australia Day medals to the two winners.

We then enjoyed a barbecue luncheon to finish the day.
