AFL Victoria has announced a new partnership with School Sport Victoria as the state body looks to broaden football opportunities for primary and secondary students across Victoria.

SSV, which was established in 2010, helps to provide sporting opportunities for young people, with a greater focus on promoting physical activity among school students.

Since SSV’s inception, participation opportunities in the Australian rules football interschool competition grew by 24 per cent by 2019.

SSV has also helped deliver interschool sport opportunities for girls for more than 25 years and has contributed to a large growth in football participation among primary school girls, growing to 9300 from 2010 to 2019.

AFL Victoria head Ben Kavenagh said the new partnership would go a long way in getting young people more involved in Aussie rules football.

“Australian football has been a huge part of schools in Victoria for generations and will continue to be,” Kavenagh said.

“The work School Sport Victoria does in promoting and helping to grow the game is a significant part of this.

“AFL Victoria is pleased to continue to partner with SSV and support the delivery of school football competitions, which help ensure schools, students and teachers across the state remain closely connected to Australian football and can participate in our great game.”
